Every brand that sells to families eventually tries matching outfits, and every teenager eventually refuses. So we started from the refusal.
The pair in these frames share a wardrobe more than either of them admits. The mother buys Bone and Chocolate. The daughter buys Dusty Rose and Mauve, and then takes the Bone anyway. What they agree on is the fabric — which is the only thing we ask them to agree on.
Matching doesn't have to mean identical. Buy the same hood twice in two colours and you get a photograph they will both stand still for; buy it in one colour and you get an argument.
Youth L fits fourteen to sixteen. Youth XL fits sixteen to eighteen. After that they are simply buying adult sizes, which is its own kind of milestone.
